After CNN came under fire for Susan Roesgen’s shameful treatment of the Chicago Tea Party patriots, the network has put her on vacation, removed the video of her journalistic meltdown, and, when that failed to stop the rising tide of anti-Roesgen complaints, removed the video from YouTube.

CNN is now threatening people who re-post its video with copyright infringement. Patterico’s call to arms asks bloggers to re-post the video to thwart CNN’s cover-up. He also links to Ben Sheffer, who says that posting the video, given the facts that he is aware of, is an “easy” case: it definitely falls under the “fair use” exception to the Copyright Act. So here’s a link to Patterico’s own YouTube copy of the video.

Although this blogger would be happy to be a co-defendant in a copyright infringement case, brought by CNN against those who have the temerity to criticise them, she does not think that it will come to that. CNN may have a rogue reporter (perhaps one goaded on by her organisation), but it cannot afford to anger the 51% of Americans who support the Tea Parties.

Meanwhile, Eric Odom is calling for a boycott of CNN’s sponsors. Obviously, many Tea Party attendees and sympathizers do not watch the channel, so a boycott of it would be ineffective; however, a boycott of its sponsors and advertisers would demonstrate that the American people will not abide a media that treats citizens as a hostile enemy.

A few people have mentioned that they need rides into Boston for our Tea Party. If you either need a ride in, or would like to share gas and parking, please use this space to get in touch with fellow Tea Party revelers. Include your town, time when you would like to leave and return, and your email. Unfortunately, us Tea Party mavens can’t vouch for anyone, so please be sensible about meeting people over the internet.

Logistics: street parking is available in Boston, although hard to find. There is a two-hour limit, and it’s $1.25/hour (quarters only). GOPMom suggested the parking garage underneath Boston Common, as it is very close to the event and relatively inexpensive.

Once you’ve arrived at the State House/Common area (near the Park Street T stop), look for the group with signs, American flags, tables, and a tent.

The Obama administration and its effect on America, international affairs, and freedom.

Real Clear Politics has a great article about one of Obama’s blind spots: his lack of understanding of the conservative position, after having spent his entire life among radical liberals. From his perspective, his agenda is moderate, and his mode of governing is bipartisan. However, in a country that remains deeply conservative and distrustful of aggregations of state power and socialism, Obama’s policies are wrongheaded. While this may not give much perspective on his rhetoric, it is enlightening and helpful to counteract the assertions of our fellow citizens who believe that Washington is acting in a bipartisan and centrist manner.

Patterico praises Fred Thompson for his response to the Obama administration: wanting that which will be harmful to fail, and that which will be helpful to succeed. This differs in style but not in substance from Rush Limbaugh’s remarks, and, more importantly, fails to communicate the horrific situation awaiting America if we continue down this path. Great civilisations the world over have fallen; when the Roman Empire fell, it took most of the world with it for a millennium. America – for all its wealth, innovation, and intellectual firepower – is not immune from the fate that has eventually met every once-great country.

Speaking of Patterico’s: Scott Jacobs of The Jury Talks Back has a more fiery post about the effect of Tim Geithner’s rhetorical missteps on the American economy. This blogger is shocked to find that Mr. Jacobs failed to liken the effects of erstwhile Treasury Secretary to a WMD, or even a Republican at a swanky Manhattan cocktail party, to make his point.

It’s not just gun sales that are on the rise: the latest economic news has apparently stimulated another branch of the economy. It’s good news, especially for those in sticky situations. (With this, yours truly will stop making all sorts of double entendres.)

France, Germany, and New Zealand have rejected calls to spend their way to prosperity. When socialist countries act more capitalistic than we do, we may want to assume that they’ve tried our newfangled ideas and found them lacking.

Nevertheless, what works in compact countries like New Zealand may be comically ineffective in America – a vast, sprawling expanse of suburbs, rural farmland, and cities where the average commuting time is 90 minutes and the average commuting distance is six miles. Somehow, this blogger doubts that any amount of money or technology can get an American to say, “Road trip! Split the electric bill?”

The Boston Globe reports: Gov. Deval Patrick gave one of his longtime supporters, Marian Walsh, a $175,000/year job as an assistant director at a state bonding agency. Ms. Walsh will make almost $100,000/year more than she does at her current job. Oddly enough, even though Ms. Walsh’s position is supposedly so important and amazing as to justify a rather nice salary, the position that she will be filling has been vacant for over 12 years. Furthermore, Ms. Walsh’s husband makes $113,000/year as a member of the state’s Industrial Accident Board, which, aside from giving him a lovely six-figure salary, increases his state pension (which he became eligible for as a district court judge).

This blogger has very little to say about a husband-and-wife pair that makes almost $300,000/year off of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, in exchange for their support of Gov. Patrick, because the state Republicans said it best:

“Creating a job for Marian Walsh does not count as one of the thousands of jobs Governor Patrick promised to create in Massachusetts,” said Barney Keller, the GOP spokesman. “Instead of rewarding supporters with high-paying jobs, the governor should focus on creating jobs for the thousands of unemployed taxpayers.”

The only bright side: the Walshes make enough money off of the taxpayers so as to be considered “rich” by Obama-Biden standards.

(If you’re so inclined, check out the comments on the Boston Globe article. “Not only is this a blatant slap in the face to all of us, his constituents, but also an embarrassment to those of whom voted for him. Today, I am ashamed. Do you think Mitt would come back and clean house if we begged and apologized for our short-sightedness?” Or, “Just like the Tea Act of 1773. This is truly taxation without representation. There is no one on the Hill speaking for me. Next comes the Intolerable Act of 2009. This is where they shut down our towns increase our taxes and force us to house and supply their people. But that’s OK, Because if history repeats itself, the revolution is just around the corner.”)

The Wall Street Journal reports that economists give the Obama administration failing grades for economic policy. (Hat tip: Hot Air.) The criticisms include not delivering on campaign and Presidential promises, a lack of specifics for implementation of policies, and the lack of investor confidence (the Dow is down almost 20% since Geither’s announcement of the Obama recovery plan).

The most interesting part of this – and of many of the Treasury’s excuses – is that there are not simply enough people in the federal government to carry out the tasks of bailing out private banks, nationalising industries, and implementing the bailout. On a superficial level, such rationalisation is ridiculous: the Treasury is short-staffed because a Democrat President cannot get a Democrat-run Congress to appoint his people. That party’s failure is hardly some divinely-created apocalyptic crisis. More importantly, it reveals an underlying, fundamental problem with the policies of the last few months (and, to some extent, since the New Deal): the federal government is not equipped to deal with these radical expansions in power because it is operating so far outside of its jurisdiction. The economic failure we are seeing now is a direct consequence of the fact that the federal government overstepped its constitutional limits and ability to govern.

When Gov. Patrick extols the wonders of the stimulus bill and talks about all the glorious funding we will receive, just remember: $22 million of the $125 million slated to go to this state will be for the John F. Kennedy Museum, and another $5.2 million will go to a memorial for Teddy Kennedy. (Hat tip: Michelle Malkin.) While these may be noble projects that will improve Boston’s cultural life, they are not appropriate expenditures during the worst economy in several decades, especially when financed with debt. Furthermore, they are not remotely issues of national importance that would justify federal (as opposed to state) spending; in fact, they are the types of projects usually financed with privately, perhaps with a minimum amount of state funds. As such, they should not be named for or after anyone except for the charitable donor or the honouree of that benefactor’s choosing. Even assuming that these funds should be spent, by the federal government, for these projects, those projects should be named after the donors: the American taxpayer.

Thomas Sowell elucidates the inanity of pay caps for CEOs. My one addition to this is that the wrong people are targeted by these proposed pay caps. If one CEO were to run a company into bankruptcy, his pay should be, in theory, absolutely nothing: he did not add anything to the corporation. If his successor, a turnaround specialist, were to take over and make the formerly insolvent, struggling company into a profitable enterprise, then the value placed upon his work should be limited only by market rates and the amount of wealth he has added to the company. The theory behind the pay caps (i.e. that there is no injustice in shortchanging one executive because his predecessor was overpaid) is vindictive and counterproductive: it does not target the individuals who harmed their companies, but rather limits the salaries of those who clean up the mess.

Despite Obama’s countless campaign missives about fiscal conservatism and the excesses of George W. Bush, his administration is set to match Bush’s 8-year expenditures in less than two years. (Hat tip: RedMassGroup.) Some of this is because, despite his campaign promises to the contrary, Obama has signed a budget into law that includes over 8,000 earmarks. Obama’s response to angered voters is that the bill needs to be signed, and that he will tackle the earmark problem later. Poppets: listen to what he does, not what he says; he’s just not that into you.

Have any good Tea Party ideas? Have an inside track on the best place for 18th century garb? Always wanted to make an East India Company ship on wheels, but never knew what you would do with it? Leave a note in the comments!

Boston-area college student or alumna/us with ties to your local alma mater? Ask their political action groups to email their mailing lists with info about the Tax Day tea party and show up on 15 April.

Contact your representatives! Here is a link for MA state reps, another for state senate, Massachusetts congressmen, and, finally, a link each for Ted Kennedy and John Kerry. Obviously, Congressmen and Senators are responsible for the passage of the stimulus, TARP, and the earmark-ridden budget.

State senators and representatives should be contacted, too. As Massachusetts faces a budget deficit, we need to communicate with our lawmakers that the government does not generate its own wealth: taxation is a zero-sum game. Massachusetts may only “raise revenue” – especially in this economy – by taxing its citizens. Every plan to increase the amount of money that is available to the state must be done by taking the same amount of money from citizens who are facing job loss, a recession, astronomical property taxes and housing costs, and, often, expenses for higher education. Massachusetts has had several businesses leave in the past several years, or remain but headquarter elsewhere. Likewise, many former Bostonians have moved to New Hampshire or other states so that they can have more affordable housing, more job opportunities, and lower taxes. If Massachusetts – a state with unparalled intellectual capital, public school systems, parks, and culture – is to remain viable, it cannot raise revenue by making it more expensive to do business, employ people, and commute to work.
